Why does my throat hurt

When a throat hurts only at night and early morning but feels normal by midday, the cause is almost always something happening while you sleep — not an infection.

The most common reasons are:

• Mouth breathing or snoring → dries out throat tissues overnight.
• Silent acid reflux (laryngopharyngeal reflux) → stomach acid irritates the throat when lying down.
• Postnasal drip from mild allergies → mucus pools in the throat overnight.
• Dry air / fan / AC exposure → dehydrates the throat lining.

By noon, you’ve been upright, hydrated, swallowing frequently, and producing saliva — which naturally soothes and clears irritation.

If there’s no fever, body ache, or worsening pain during the day, infection is unlikely.

If it persists more than 2–3 weeks, is associated with chronic cough, hoarseness, or frequent throat clearing, reflux or allergies are the most likely culprits and worth addressing.
