I am 52 years old and recently I have started feeling constant pain in my knees whenever I stand for more than 15–20 minutes. Sometimes there is slight swelling and stiffness in the morning. My doctor said my vitamin D is low but I am not sure if that is the only reason. Could diet or lifestyle habits make this worse? What should I avoid eating?
Persistent knee pain with swelling and stiffness often suggests joint inflammation or early degenerative changes rather than just vitamin D deficiency. While correcting vitamin D levels is important for bone health, other factors such as excess body weight, long standing posture, poor muscle support around the knee, and chronic inflammation can worsen symptoms. I usually advise patients to focus on maintaining a balanced diet rich in calcium, magnesium and anti inflammatory foods such as vegetables, seeds and omega 3 sources. At the same time, limiting processed foods, excessive sugar and refined carbohydrates may help reduce inflammation. Consulting an orthopedic specialist for imaging and beginning gentle strengthening exercises around the knee joint can significantly improve stability and reduce pain over time.
