Should I use gymnastic rings for pull ups? Are these good for gaining real functional strength??

Yes — gymnastic rings are excellent for building real functional strength, but they’re more demanding than fixed bars.
Because rings are unstable and move freely, your shoulders, core, and scapular stabilizers must work harder to control the motion. This increases joint stability, coordination, and strength through a more natural movement path. Many people find rings more shoulder-friendly than straight bars because they allow your wrists and elbows to rotate freely.
However, they are also more fatiguing and harder to progressively overload for pure max strength compared to weighted bar pull-ups.
Best approach:
Use rings to build joint strength, control, and stability — and use a fixed bar when chasing maximal weighted strength. Together, they develop both “real-world” strength and measurable pulling power.
