Three-time Champion for the Black Wings

With Marcel Witting, the Upper Austrians have secured a three-time champion from record champions KAC, who recently had his best season in terms of points.

The squad for the new season in the win2day ICE Hockey League is growing again. With their second new signing, Linz can secure the services of another promising Austrian. 28-year-old Marcel Witting is moving to the steel city for the coming season and will wear colors other than red and white for the first time in the country’s top division. Born in Tyrol and raised at HC Innsbruck, the striker moved to the Austrian record champions in 2011 at the age of 15. Witting played for KAC for 11 years and repeatedly worked his way into the first team via the Alps Hockey League.

Three-time Champion for the Black Wings.

Just one year after moving to Klagenfurt, the left-handed shooter made his debut in the then EBEL and was able to celebrate the championship with the Red Jackets at a young age. After sporadic appearances for the first team, Witting then toiled a level below and played for VEU Feldkirch and EHC Lustenau for one season each between 2016 and 2018. He was then called back to the Lindwurmstadt and played his first full season in the Bundesliga. The winger made an immediate impact, playing all 54 matches in the regular season (2 goals / 11 assists) and going all the way to the end of the playoffs with KAC to receive the Karl Nedwed Trophy. His second championship title was then the starting signal for a change of play between the first team and the newly founded Future Team in the AlpsHL.

In 2020/21, Witting was crowned champion with the Red Jackets for a third time, but after a mixed regular season, he was only on the ice in one match in the post season. The number 47 was sidelined under then head coach Petri Matikainen . But Witting showed his fire all the more and won back his regular jersey. With Klagenfurt’s new path last year, the new Linz player found his place and delivered his personally most successful season. For the first time, he scored five goals and a further six assists, making him an up-and-coming building block all the way to Game 7 of the final against Salzburg. With this tailwind, Marcel Witting is now joining the Steinbach Black Wings and will continue his journey of almost 250 games in the win2day ICE Hockey League with the number 15.

Head Coach Philipp Lukas: “We were looking for Austrian players who fit our identity. With a little luck, we managed to sign Marcel Witting, who we are very happy about. He brings depth to our squad and should encourage internal competition. Marcel has a great work ethic, which he has proven many times at KAC. He knows what it takes to win in the end.”

Marcel Witting: “I’m full of anticipation and can hardly wait to experience something new after such a long time. When I got the offer, I didn’t think twice and was immediately excited. For me, the most important thing is to integrate myself into the group quickly. I know a few guys and have only heard good things. Linz is a really cool ice hockey city. I’ve been here so many times as an opponent and now I finally have these unique fans behind me.”
