Kaa Gent Loses Last Practice Match With Experimental Team

On a warm Saturday afternoon, KAA Gent played its last practice match of the season. In the Chillax Arena – behind closed doors – our youngsters in particular got the chance to gain playing minutes, while many basic players were allowed to rest after all the training work. The final score was 0-2 against Zulte Waregem.

KAA Gent started with 11 Buffalos who were not in the starting line-up against Lille. Fernandez-Pardo was again in the selection and was also in the starting line-up. De Schrevel, Lagae, Vernemmen, Asselman, Sonko and Dean started on the bench, all others were given a rest after a morning training.

First Half.

The first chance of the match was for KAA Gent. Gerkens was able to take a shot from close range, but the keeper saved. Zulte Waregem quickly had an answer ready: first Schmidt saved a shot from Gavriel, a little later the visitors scored when Nyssen was given too much freedom after a corner.

The Buffaloes dominated the game, with an especially busy Samoise. Matisse shot three times on goal, but was not rewarded with a goal. For Zulte Waregem, Vossen came close to scoring. His magnificent shot was saved just as beautifully from under the crossbar by Schmidt. Just before the break, the Japanese player made another save on a header from Vossen again.

Second Half.

After the break, three new names entered the field with Dean, Asselman and Lagae. Abdullahi, Fernandez-Pardo and Torunarigha remained in the dressing room. Dean showed himself eager, but it was Zulte Waregem that doubled the lead. Erenbjerg pushed the ball into the goal from close range.

Zulte Waregem dropped back a bit, for KAA Gent it was not easy to find the spaces. De Vlieger tried it with a shot from a distance, goalkeeper Van der Gouw pushed in a corner. Dean and Sonko also shot on goal, but the best chance was for Zulte Waregem with a ball on the crossbar.

While Kums and co watched from the stands, it was an educational afternoon for the others. De Vlieger, Ayinde and Gambor were among those given 90 minutes. Dean made his debut, while Abdullahi, Vernemmen and Asselman were also allowed to show themselves. On to the first official match, next Thursday against Vikingur.
