When I increase protein, I feel heavy and uncomfortable. Is this a digestion issue or just my body adapting?

Feeling heavy after increasing protein is usually a digestive adaptation issue rather than a metabolic problem. Higher protein slows gastric emptying and increases satiety hormones (like CCK and GLP-1), which can create fullness. If intake rises quickly, the gut may struggle temporarily with enzyme production, stomach acid levels, or overall meal volume. Large portions, low hydration, low fiber balance, or lactose sensitivity (with whey/dairy) can worsen the sensation. Gradually increasing protein, spreading it across meals, chewing thoroughly, and ensuring adequate fluids usually resolves the discomfort within 1–2 weeks.
