Does my A1C level matter if I am not diabetic but my morning fasted glucose is always around 105??
Yes — it matters.
A fasting glucose around 105 mg/dL falls into the impaired fasting glucose (prediabetes) range (100–125). Even if you’re not diabetic, this suggests some degree of insulin resistance.
Your A1C gives a 3-month average of blood sugar. If your A1C is:
- <5.4% → usually low overall risk
- 5.5–5.6% → early metabolic drift
- 5.7–6.4% → prediabetes range
Here’s the key: fasting glucose and A1C don’t always match. Some people have slightly elevated fasting glucose due to dawn phenomenon (early morning cortisol rise) but normal overall glucose control. Others have normal fasting numbers but higher post-meal spikes that push A1C up.
So yes — checking A1C (and ideally fasting insulin or a glucose tolerance test) helps determine whether 105 is just stress-related physiology or early metabolic dysfunction.
At this stage, it’s very reversible with sleep, resistance training, muscle mass, and stable meal timing.
